Mage of All Trades

The only tip you’ll ever need to properly play BLM:

LEARN TO SOLO.

And I’m not talking about a too-weak mob you can melee with your ice staff. I’m talking go to sea, and solo quest your obis. Solo your relaxing earring. Solo Fortitude and Ix’MNK trigger sets. When you get better at enfeebling, you can start solo popping Ix’DRG, Ix’DRK, and Temperance while your LS is out farming somewhere else. Sea is by far the best training ground for learning to solo BLM.

If you dont have sea access, you can farm Diorite in sky for the same difficulty level of solo.

You will soon realize how much stronger of a BLM you become in group environments once you’ve learned to effectively solo.

Nicely said!  I remember whe Star was leveing his Black Mage, I told him that the greatest diservice he could do to himself was to party/level sync the entire way to 75.  You certainly CAN do that, at this point…but soloing is so much more rewarding.  This takes it quite a bit further, and is something that I want to be working on.

Star and I have been wanting to farm for diorite and camp Despot as a way of making gil (on our server both Dio and Despot’s drop sell for ~400k or so, last I saw), but have been avoiding it because we want to finish Star’s /WHM (though, we should probably both be /RDM and just fork out the gil for RR items anyways).  Ah well, I’ve been taking the time to merit BLM (8/8 Enf, 8/8 Ele, 5/5 Lightning Potency, 4/5 Ice Potency, 1/5 Burst II + Freeze II, 8/8 MP), and things like this can only get easier with additional merits.

I think I’ll see if we can possibly go poke Despot or farm for dio later this week–200k each would certainly be nice!  Plus, for some reason Sky NMs seem much less intimidating–I did sky for a good 8 months, 2x/week every week, so I’ve got a good understanding of how that works.  I’m just barely begining to poke Sea now!  We do have a few very talented players in our end game ls though; perhaps Star and I could get someone to come out and give us a few pointers!

But yes, I agree whole-heartedly with that quote: the more experience you have on BLM with soloing and duoing, etc.. the stronger BLM you’ll be.  Every event, heck, every GROUP, is different…but knowing how to handle yourself and how to react to what is rarely a disadvantage!
